Jesús Pérez Magallón
Current Hispanic Baroque Research
Recent Publications
Dr. Jesús Pérez-Magallón is Professor and Chair of the Department of Hispanic Studies at McGill University, General Editor of Revista Canadiense de Estudios Hispánicos and Joint Editor of the journal Hecho Teatral. Dr Pérez-Magallón's principal area of research lies in the origins of modernity, particularly in the transition from the Baroque to the Enlightenment and nineteenth-century intellectual history. His current project, funded by SSHRC, deals with the ideological reception of Calderón and his transformation into a cultural icon for the conservative parties between the 18th-19th centuries.
Current Hispanic Baroque Research:
His contribution to 'The Hispanic Baroque" project will explore the process leading to the articulation of conflicting national identities in the Peninsula as well as in the American Viceroyalties. Drawing on theories on national identities, he will investigate the actual processes that took place in the Hispanic world during the Habsburgs and the Bourbons, until national Latin American independences.
Recent Publications:
His editions and co-editions include Leandro Fernández de Moratín, Francisco Gutiérrez de los Ríos, Conde de Fernán-Núñez, Tomás de Iriarte and Nicolás Fernández de Moratín, as well as critical collections on Golden Age Drama and Culture between 19th and 20th centuries.
